‘This is your life, and it’s ending one second at a time…’ is a famous quote that perfectly sums the transient nature of our lives. There is nothing we can do to slow down the relentless flow of time, but what we can do is make sure we extract the fullest meaning from the life we have lived in the limited time at our disposal.

So how do we do that? We all have heard well meaning but generic phrases like ‘Seize the day!’, ‘Take control of your destiny!’ and ‘Stop and smell the roses.’ But all these bland proclamations do not help the person who desires to discover how to get more out of life. How can you, right now, ensure you do not waste one more second of the most precious resource available to you?

Well, you begin by taking a deep breath. Relax. Understand that life is not a race to the finish line, but a journey of exploration which is made far more enriching by taking the time to stop and appreciate all you have already experienced and all you already achieved.
All that hurry achieves is that you become too distracted to appreciate the new things that every fresh experience is showing you.

Then you move onto some serious introspection. Why do you need to do that? Often times we get swept up in what the masses want and desire. That gives rise to such phenomena as the rat race among employees, the thirst for attention among internet stars and other damaging behavior. You need to introspect in order to understand what you truly want out of life, and how you can achieve it.

You are a unique individual, and your goals are going to be different from others. Some people value money, others family, yet others desire fame. Try to find out exactly what kind of rewards from life your unique nature desires. And try to remember the happiest individuals are those who have learned to strike a balance between their various desires.

Once you are calm, and know exactly what you want out of life, begin to make plans for achieving your goals. Don’t forget the quote this article began with. Don’t be frightened by it, but use it as fuel to constantly remind you of all that you still have left to do. Don’t let opportunities slip past you because you were too late, or not prepared. When the time comes to prove yourself and turn your dreams into reality, it should find you ready and waiting.

Let time become your friend rather than your enemy.
